Start with eligibility rather than a label
Ask which policies and laws cover your employment. The federal Family and Medical Leave Act provides qualifying employees of covered employers with job-protected leave for specified reasons, including birth and certain placements. Employer coverage, service history, and other eligibility conditions matter. A colleague’s entitlement or a general handbook heading does not establish what applies to your own circumstances.
Work out where income comes from
FMLA leave is generally unpaid, although paid employer leave may run at the same time. State benefits, employer parental pay, and other programmes can involve separate rules and applications. Ask which periods overlap and which require additional approval. Do not simply add every advertised benefit together; make a calendar showing the source and conditions of pay for each period.

Clarify the reason and schedule
Bonding leave and leave for a qualifying health condition can involve different requirements. Department of Labor guidance explains that intermittent FMLA bonding leave requires employer agreement. Discuss the proposed dates, the possibility that timing changes, and the notice process. If both parents work for the same employer, ask whether special combined-leave rules affect the particular leave being requested.
Check benefits and administrative steps
Request written information about insurance contributions, payroll deductions, required forms, and who handles changes while you are away. List submission dates and keep proof of delivery. Ask how the employer will communicate a designation or eligibility decision. A manager’s informal approval may not complete a separate benefits application or resolve the details of a statutory leave request.
Prepare for a realistic return
Confirm the expected return date and the process if circumstances change. Discuss any separate accommodation or pumping arrangements in advance when possible. Keep the final schedule and benefit notices together with the earlier request. If there is a dispute about eligibility, reinstatement, or retaliation, get timely advice rather than assuming an ongoing workplace conversation preserves every available deadline.
