Find the complete current order
Collect the signed order, later modifications, case number, and details of the issuing court or agency. Identify provisions about ordinary support, health coverage, childcare, and other expenses. A payment history helps distinguish the required amount from what was actually paid. Do not rely on memory or a single page that omits an important condition or later amendment.
Describe what has changed
Write down the event, its date, and the evidence supporting it. Relevant circumstances can include income changes or a different care arrangement, but the legal standard varies. The federal Office of Child Support Services describes review and adjustment as a process governed by the relevant programme. A change in household finances does not by itself establish the amount of a revised order.

Use records that explain the numbers
Gather recent pay information, benefit notices, tax documents where appropriate, and evidence of relevant child-related costs. For variable income, include enough context to avoid presenting an unusual month as a normal pattern. Label estimates as estimates. Keep a separate explanation of one-time payments or unusual expenses so a reviewer can understand the figures rather than having to guess.
Check the correct process promptly
Ask the agency, court self-help service, or a family lawyer where to apply and what forms and notice are required. Interstate or tribal cases may involve additional questions about authority. Ask when a change could take effect and what obligations continue during review. Do not assume a private agreement, application, or changed pay cheque automatically replaces the existing order.
Keep support and parenting disputes distinct
A dispute over payments and a dispute over parenting time need the appropriate legal response to each. Do not treat one as permission to disregard the other’s governing order. Maintain a record of submissions, service, hearing notices, and the eventual decision. Once an order changes, check that the relevant payment or withholding arrangements reflect the actual terms.
